Sakana – the Japanese kanji for 'fish.'
I chose to name this surboard "Sakana" because its shape is a fish tail, characterised by the distinctive split tail design. This type of board is versatile and can be enjoyed by surfers of all skill levels. Although I intend for this board to be displayed as an artwork, it is also a fully functional surboard. I firmly believe that all things should be designed with use in mind, and this piece reflects that philosophy.
My artwork is created using Suminagashi, a traditional Japanese method of marbling paper with sumi ink. For this piece, I used sumi ink from Nara, Japan. The ink was hand-dyed onto silk, which has been carefully inlaid onto the surboard. The board was then sealed in resin and fibreglass to ensure both durability and a beautiful finish.
